The market for using Active Fog Barriers as a theft prevention tool came about because of an increase in the ability of thieves to circumvent existing physical security measures, often by simply raising the level of violence utilized to gain entry. Burglar Alarms often have a delay of several minutes before police or private security are able to respond, meaning a well-organized criminal has a period of time in which to enter and take what they like.  The Active Fog Barrier market developed as an alternative security method, designed not to deter entry, but to prevent loss if a thief did gain access.

Active Fog Barriers have been employed in a wide variety of industries, including banks, jewelers, retail premises, cash-handling chains, offices and private homes. Often businesses have turned to them when other, more traditional, security methods have failed to prevent repeated break-ins and stock loss. 

In its simplest form, a Fog Barrier produces a wall of fog which effectively cloaks the targeted valuables, inventory, or assets that a perpetrator intends on stealing thus causing them to abandon their intent and leave the premises. Fog is produced by a liquid comprised of approximately 90% glycol and 10% distilled water (similar to that used at rock concerts). Contact of the liquid with the heat exchanger instantly turns the fluid into thick fog. In order to avoid false discharges, the unit is triggered by a two step process which combines a traditional alarm system married to a motion detector. Once in Armed Mode, the ejection occurs only when the perpetrator is detected by a motion detector. More elaborate systems include live monitoring and triggering in an “always-on” manned platform.
